The tear film is a three-layered coating. Lipid (oil) to prevent evaporation, aqueous (water) for hydration, and nutrients and mucin (mucus) to anchor it to the eye. That maintains ocular surface stability, lubrication, and protection, typically lasting 7–10 seconds between blinks in healthy eyes.

What Is Evaporative Dry Eye?
Evaporative dry eye, the most prevalent form (80–90% of cases), results from a deficient or disrupted lipid layer that allows rapid evaporation of the aqueous layer, exacerbated by environmental factors and meibomian gland issues, leading to tear film instability, hyperosmolarity, inflammation, and symptoms including burning, grittiness, fluctuating vision, and discomfort.
